Native Americans of this area were the first to discover Manitou and its healing springs, the intense effervescence caused by high levels of carbonic acid within these springs created the first carbonated drink—a remedy these ancient people used for several ailments. The nations of the Ute, Arapaho, Cheyenne and Kiowa all considered this land neutral ground, a place where spirits and man connected and fighting was not necessary. Manitou Springs became a place where anyone could relieve their physical woes without the worry of defending themselves; peace was truly had within these hills. The expanding United States of America first became aware of Manitou Springs after the purchase of the Louisiana Territory in 1803. President Thomas Jefferson ordered several battalions of military personal to survey these lands, and many of them came back with amazing stories to tell of a small region in Colorado and its wonderful, medicinal waters. Popularity of the area increased and a small settlement was established in the vicinity. After years of acknowledgement and reverence, this small village soon grew into the stunning example of hometown living that is Manitou Springs.
