Air Force Academy General United States Air Force Academy
The Air Force Academy is the youngest of the United States service academies. The Academy is one of four military bases throughout Colorado Springs. Colorado Springs is a well-rounded community and combines scenic beauty, pleasant residential areas, clean modern industry, attractive military installations, and cultural activities to satisfy every taste. Colorado Springs offers a variety of recreational and cultural activity. You can ski in the morning, golf in the afternoon, or even attend the symphony. Colorado Springs is located 6,035 feet above sea level, sheltered by the towering 14,110 foot-high Pikes Peak. This locale assures cool, dry summers and comfortable, mild winters with the low humidity tempering the extremes of the respective seasons.
In 1806, a group of prospectors chose the Colorado Springs area as the center for mountain mining activity. The town became known as El Paso City. Prior to the Civil War, the name was changed to Colorado City. The nearness of Colorado City and many mineral springs gave Colorado City its new name, Colorado Springs. By 1917, Colorado City was completely absorbed by Colorado Springs. President Dwight D. Eisenhower signed a congressional bill establishing the Air Force Academy on April 1, 1954. Secretary of the Air Force Harold E. Talbott chose Colorado Springs as the site for the new academy. The first class entered The Air Force Academy in July 1955 at temporary facilities at Lowry Air Force Base, Denver. Construction for the present site also began that year. The first class graduated from the Academy in June of 1959. The first class with women entered in June 1976 and graduated in May 1980.
To enroll in The Air Force Academy, Cadets must be between 17 and 22 on July 1 of the year of admission. Each must be a U.S. citizen, unmarried and have no dependent children. Applicants must have good grades, be active in athletic and non-athletic extracurricular activities, and be in good physical condition. Sponsors are appointed to help all personnel assigned to the Academy. They are prepared to help Cadets with any questions or problems before their arrival and while getting settled. Upon arriving, cadets will check in with their sponsor. Cadets will need to hand-carry their orders, the sealed records package from their losing military personnel flight and be in uniform. During the first month following arrival, cadets will attend a briefing from the finance office, military personnel flight, newcomer's orientation/information fair and, if applicable, a first duty station/military equal opportunity orientation. Spouses and teenage family members are encouraged to attend the newcomer's orientation/information fair. The Visitor Center at the Air Force Academy is open seven days a week. The center features a movie every half-hour about the academy and cadet life. There are also many displays as well as snack bar, gift shop and public restrooms. Here visitors can also take a nature trail that leads from the Visitor Center to the Cadet Chapel. The Cadet Chapel is the Air Force Academy's most prominent attraction. The chapel was a recipient of an American Institute of Architects award in 1996. The chapel accommodates Protestant, Catholic and Jewish services. The Academy hospital is a well-equipped facility. The Academy's professional medical staff provides care in most major medical specialties. The hospital also offers the latest technologies including CAT scan, MRI, ultrasound, laparoscopic and arthroscopic surgery and a same-day surgery unit. There are two dental facilities on the Academy. The Academy Dental Clinic is located in the Fairchild Hall Annex. The Academy Dental Clinic provides dental care to active-duty members, cadets and preparatory school students. There is a dentist on call for after-hours dental emergencies.
