Military Affairs Division and Council

The Military Affairs Division of the Chamber of Commerce was formed in 1941 and is one of the oldest and strongest in the country. More than 225 members pay an annual participation fee in addition to their Chamber dues to be a member of the Affairs Council. Members develop and maintain an environment which supports both economically and culturally the military involvement in the community.

The Military Affairs Division provides many programs in support of the military and their families. The Division also supports programs that provide an opportunity for the community to learn more about the military and to hear from senior leaders in the area.

The Military Affairs Council and its members also support many military related activities throughout the year, including the Annual Armed Forces Week Activities, Military Speakers Luncheons, the Annual Military Family Career Fair, and much more.

One of the more major activities is Armed Forces Week Concert and Luncheon. Armed Forces Week is traditionally scheduled to coincide with Armed Forces Day so that the community has an opportunity to express their gratitude for the military for their dedication and service. The United States Air Force Academy Band and the Colorado Springs Chorale provide a patriotic concert at the Pikes Peak Center, followed later in the week by a gala luncheon attended by over 900 at the Broadmoor. The luncheon honors the top enlisted members of the military.

If you are interested in hearing about up to date leadership information going on at the bases, attend one of the Military Speakers Luncheons, which are held twice a year. These informative luncheons allow for networking as well as providing a glimpse of recent activities at our bases.

Fort Carson

Fort Carson is an Army post located southwest of Colorado Springs in El Paso County. Fort Carson is located 6,035 feet above sea level, giving the Colorado Springs' area dry, thin air that intensifies the summer temperatures. Winters are moderate with most of the snowfall typically coming in March and April but melting quickly.

Fort Carson is recognized as being one of the world's premier locations to lead, train, and maintain while preparing soldiers to win on the battlefield. Fort Carson has several vehicle maintenance facilities for tanks and other tracked and wheeled vehicles. A complete tank engine depot maintenance and dynamometer testing facility is also located at Fort Carson.

Fort Carson is not an open post. All incoming soldiers and civilian personnel are required to permanently register their vehicles. To enter Fort Carson, you must have a valid driver's license, vehicle registration, and proof of insurance and valid photographic identification. To permanently register your vehicle, you will also have to have to pass Colorado emissions inspection.

Evans Army Community Hospital on post has inpatient beds and a broad range of outpatient services. Dental care is available to active duty; family dental care can be obtained off-post.

Many additional housing units have been built recently, but waiting periods for on-post housing still remains common. Off-post housing is available to rent or buy at prices that fall in the middle of a national average comparison scale.

On-post facilities include a library, pools, golf, bowling, a woodcraft shop, craft center, auto center and more. The Army maintains Turkey Creek Ranch just south of Fort Carson, which offers pony and stagecoach rides, pack trips, and stables.

History

Fort Carson began with Japan's attack on Pearl Harbor in 1941. Officials in Washington, D.C. began to select new sites for military installations immediately. Less than a month after the attack, it was announced that Colorado Springs had been selected as the site for a new army camp. Many newspapers in Colorado Springs began to report that the installation would be called Camp Carson in honor of the famous frontiersman Brigadier General Christopher “Kit” Carson.

During World War II, a total of 104,165 soldiers trained at Camp Carson. More than 125 units were activated at Camp Carson and over 100 other units were transferred to the Mountain Post from other installations. The camp trained nurses, cooks, mule packers, tank battalions, a Greek infantry battalion and an Italian ordnance company.

Camp Carson became a fort on August 27, 1954. Residents of Colorado Springs were enthralled, because with permanent military payroll, the prospects looked good.

By 1966, Fort Carson had acquired 138,523 acres of land, which brought it to its current size today. On March 7, 1966, Camp Red Devil was opened. The camp was the first year-round training area at Fort Carson for soldiers in a field environment. The base camp, which can accommodate as many as 950 soldiers, is located south of the main post off Highway 115.

In 1970, Fort Carson was notified that it would be an initial test site for the Modern Volunteer Army concept. The 18-month field test was aimed at creating an environment conducive to an all-volunteer Army. The best of the test programs would be incorporated into Regular Army budgeted programs. The money that was awarded to Fort Carson to support the test program was used to increase recruitments and retain active soldiers by improving the quality of Army life. These projects included coffee houses, mobile classroom, alcohol and drug programs, outdoor recreational areas, a fine arts program, and more. Because of these new additions, living conditions at Fort Carson improved greatly.

The United States Army announced in 2004 that Fort Carson would become the new home of the 2nd Brigade, 2nd Infantry Division. The unit deployed to Iraq as part of the Operation Iraqi Freedom 2 rotation.
